Excavation and Talks at Lister Park

Illustration of the Bradford Exhibition Grounds, 104. The Somali Village appears on the right, but it is unlikely that the Somali aqal huts with their rounded thatched roofs were built in the Village. The photographic archive shows hybrid constructions using local materials and thatch imported from Somali and woven onsite. Courtesy of Bradford Museums and Art Galleries.

As part of the ongoing archaeological work to investigate the 1904 Exhibition, a team from the University of Bradford are undertaking some excavations in Lister Park during July 2025.
The first area that will be explored is the area of the Concert Hall where there are hopes that the footings of this huge but temporary building will be revealed.

On the 9th July the focus of interest will change to the area adjacent to where the Somali Village is located. During the following two weeks we plan to reveal the palisade that surrounded the village, or even the entrance. Overall, our aim is to pinpoint where exactly on the ground the village is located.

On Saturday 12th July we will have a series of short talks in the Lister Park Bandstand at 2pm – please do join us to hear about the village and the 1904 Exhibition. Speakers include Trustees of our charity, Professor Fozia Bora, Yahya Birt, and Professor Chris Gaffney.
